Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said halal industry can play a vital role in flourishing exports of Bangladeshi products to the world markets as the demand for halal food is increasing day by day, reports BSS.
“Halal food is fulfilling the requirements of safe food. Every year, the demand for halal food is increasing by 10.8 per cent in the world,” he said while addressing as the chief guest the inaugural session of “Bangladesh Food Security Conference 2017” at Sonargaon hotel in the city.
Foreign Investors’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), in collaboration with Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA), Ministry of Food and Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) jointly organised the two-day event.
Food minister Advocate M Qamrul Islam attended as the special guest while BFSA Chairman Mohammad Mahfuzul Hoque was in the chair.
In 2014, Amu informed, the amount of halal industry was US$795 billion which will be $3.7 trillion in 2019. “As the demand is in an upward trend, Bangladesh can use the potentiality by establishing more halal industries. The halal industries will also supply safe food in the domestic market,” he added.
Mentioning the safe food as a priority sector for the present government, Amu said the government has included the agro processing industries and agro machineries industries as priority sectors in the “National Industrial Policy 2016.”
“Under the instruction of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a taskforce has been formed for developing the agro processing sector. The government is also providing 20 per cent subsidy against agro processing products export to encourage the entrepreneurs of the sector,” he added.
Terming Bangladesh as a role model for ensuring food safety, the minister said, ensuring the supply of safe food still a big challenge for the country.
M Qamrul Islam said the government is working for ensuring the supply of safe food among the people as they can lead a healthy life.
