SC orders MP Rana’s presence in court during murder trial

Staff Reporter

The Supreme Court has directed the authorities concerned to produce Tangail MP Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in court on the day of the trial proceedings into freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed’s murder case.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, passed the order after Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told the court that he had heard the MP was not produced in a lower court on the scheduled date of hearing.

The AG told the court about Rana’s absence during the hearing on a petition filed by the MP seeking modification of the SC’s May 8 order that stayed his bail order for four months. The apex court also adjourned Rana’s bail hearing till October 15.

On May 8, the SC had stayed a High Court order that had granted bail to Rana in the case for four months.

The apex court also asked the trial court to finish the trial proceedings into the Faruk Ahmed murder case within six months.

Following a bail petition by Rana, the HC had granted ad-interim bail to him on April 13, and also issued a rule asking the government to explain why he should not be granted regular bail in the case.

Later, the government had appealed to the Appellate Division for staying the HC order.

As per the case history, criminals had shot dead Faruk, who was also a district Awami League leader, in front of his house at College Para in Tangail on January 18, 2013. The next day, his wife had filed a case accusing unknown attackers.

Later, she claimed that four persons from the MP’s family were involved in the murder. Police arrested Anisul Islam Raja and Mohammad Ali, who are known as close associates of the Tangail 3 lawmaker and his brothers. They confessed that Rana and his three brothers were involved in the murder.

Police submitted the chargesheet against 14 people, including Rana and his three brothers— Shahidur Rahman Khan, Jahidur Rahman Khan and Saniyat Khan Bappa.

On September 18 last year, the trial court had sent Rana to jail after he surrendered in court.

Among the MP’s brothers, Shahidur is the mayor of Tangail municipality and general secretary of Awami League’s Tangail city unit, Jahidur is the president of Tangail Chamber of Commerce, and Saniyat is a Chhatra League leader.
