8 to die,17 get life for murder

Eight people were sentenced to death and seventeen were given life term imprisonment in Habingaj and Narsingdi districts yesterday and on Tuesday.

In Habiganj, a court yesterday sentenced eight people to death and 12 others to life term imprisonment for killing a man over land dispute in 2011, reports UNB.

The condemned convicts are Shudhangshu Sen, Shuvash Sen, Ershad, Abdul Malek Malu, Abdur Rahman, Abdul Kashem, Abu Lal and Mosharraf Hossain of Ganggail village in Madhabpur upazila.

Besides, Harmuj Ali, Moshtaq, Shanu, Jabed, Jahir, Bakul, Amir Hossain, Jahirul Islam, Dulal, Kamal, Sayed and Jhanu were awarded life term imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the convicts swooped on the house of Redwanul Mohsin Tipu of the same village and stabbed him to death following enmity over the ownership of a land on January 7, 2011.

Victim’s wife filed a case with Madhabpur Police station on Jan 09, 2011.

After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Mafroza Parvin handed down the verdict acquitting three other accused as allegations brought against them could not be proved.

Our Narsingdi correspondent adds: A court in Narsingdi sentenced five people to life term imprisonment for killing a youth in Raipura upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The convicts are Miazanur Rahman and his brother Mostafa Mia, Firuj Mia, Asad Mia, and Mokbul Hosain, of Hasnabad village in Raipura upazila. The court also fined Tk 20,000 each. In default, they will have to suffer one more year in jail.

According to the prosecution, on October 13, 1992 Sadequr Rahman Topon of Hasnabad village in Raipura upazila was returning home from Hasnabad bazar around 9.30pm. Suddenly some criminals attacked, took him to a vegetable field and hacked him to death.

On October 14, 1992 his body was rescued from the vegetable field of the village. A case was filed with Raipura police station. After investigation police submitted charge sheet against five people. Additional District and Session Judge Md Shaheen Uddin, after examining the witnesses and relevant papers, found the convicts guilty and pronounced the verdict.
