Bangladesh will import two lakh tonnes of wheat from Russia at US$ 252 per tonne under government to government (G2G) arrangement. The agreement was signed at the secretariat yesterday during a meeting between Russian representatives and Bangladesh officials.
Food Ministry Secretary Md Kaikobad Hossain, who is also the head of G2G procurement committee, led a nine-member delegation on behalf of Bangladesh while Michael Potapov, director general of Potingtorg, led his 3-member Russian delegation at the meeting. Food minister Qamrul Islam was also present at the meeting.
“Basically, it was a negotiation meeting with Russia to fix the price. The price has been finalized at US$ 252 per tonne. We hope this wheat will arrive in Bangladesh within three months from signing the deal today,” Md Kaikobad Hossain told The Independent yesterday. The meeting also decided that Russia will begin supplying wheat to Bangladesh from September and they will complete the delivery by October, the food secretary added.
Apprehending possible food scarcity in near future due to damage of huge crops by flood in the country, the government earlier decided the import 20 lakh tonnes of food grain from abroad to increase the country’s stock. It would import 15 lakh tonnes of rice and 5 lakh tonnes wheat.
