JOYPURHAT: Bumper vegetable production and getting its fair prices, round the year, have brought smile on the faces of farmers in all five upazilas of the district, reports BSS.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said a total of over 48,455 hectares of land have been brought under different types of vegetable cultivation and 11.35 lakh tonnes of vegetable were produced in the year.
Deputy Director of DAE Sudhendranath Roy told BSS today that the farmers of the area were found interested in vegetable cultivation due to its high demand and prevailing favourable climatic conditions in the country.
The DAE also provided training on pest management to inspire the farmers for cultivating pesticide-free vegetables using vermin-compost and other organic fertilizers avoiding chemical fertilizers and pesticides in their field, he said. All varieties of vegetable have flooded different kitchen markets in the district with an excellent yield rate.
A good number of farmers in different upazila of the district are producing pesticide-free vegetables using organic fertilizers and they are getting fair prices.
The DAE sources said a good numbers of poor families in the district became self-reliant economically through vegetables farming during the last couple of years.
