Australian coach Darren Lehmann expressed his sympathy for the flood-affected people of Bangladesh as almost one third of the country so far has been affected during the monsoon this year.
Floods have waterlogged almost 356 Upazilas in 20 districts, including northeastern districts of Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrokona, northern districts of Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Bogra, Sirajganj and the hill tract district Rangamati.
So far, 89 flood-related deaths have been reported. Highway traffic has been severely hampered due to the floods. Rail service to Dinajpur has been shut down.
The Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium which was due to host the Australia’s tour practice game today was also water-logged, forcing the cancellation of the match.
“The amount of rain hasn’t helped. We feel for the people of Bangladesh with the amount of rain they have had. There are a lot of people in this country struggling because of the rain so the thoughts are with them,” Lehmann said yesterday.
Lehmann along with captain Steven Smith and the representatives of Cricket Australia visited the stadium yesterday after which they deemed it’s yet not fit for the game. During his visit the place, he saw the sufferings of the people due to the monsoon rain.
