DU student to join mountain expedition in India
Mohammad Imtiaz, a 4th year student of Dhaka University (DU) Accounting and Information System Department, is going to join a mountain expedition and the Ladakh Marathon in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
Imtiaz on Sunday paid a courtesy call on his university’s Vice-chancellor (VC) Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique at his office on the campus before leaving Dhaka for India, said a DU release in Dhaka yesterday. Siddique wished Imtiaz’s success on his mission and safe returning home. In a 24-day voyage, Imtiaz will ascend on the top of the Mount Stok Kangri, the highest mountain with 20,187 feet height in the Stok Range of the Himalayas in the Ladakh region of northwest India. He will take part in the ‘Ladakh Marathon’, the highest and one of the toughest marathons to be held above 11,000 feet high from the sea level and will run 42.2 kilometers.
Workshop on Earth Observations for preventing diseases held at NSU
A three-daylong workshop on remote sensing of water-related diseases, particularly focusing on cholera, was held in the North South University from August 19-21, 2017, says a press release.
The workshop was part of an ongoing research project funded through US-National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) with four Unites States of America and two local institutes from Bangladesh (ICDDRB and North South University). The research team comprising Dr Rita Colwell and Dr Anwar Huq (University of Maryland, USA) Dr Antar Jutla (West Virginia University, USA), Dr Ali S Akanda (University of Rhode Island, USA); Dr Sonia Aziz (Moravian College, USA) in association with local investigators Dr G U Ahsan (North South University, Bangladesh) and Dr Munirul Alam (ICDDRB) are working to develop a cholera warning system using remote sensing data. The workshop followed a hybrid teaching model that included virtual and live instructors.
Workshop on communication for
development begins at UGC
A three-day national workshop on ‘Fostering curriculum and research in communication for development (C4D) among academic institutions of Bangladesh to achieve results for Bangladesh’ began yesterday at the University Grants Commission (UGC) Auditorium in the capital.
University Grants Commission (UGC) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) jointly organised the workshop to be concluded on August 23, said a UGC release.
Though the workshop started today, the inaugural ceremony was held at a hotel in the capital on Sunday that was addressed by UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan as the chief guest. UNICEF Representative to Bangladesh Edouard Beigbeder was present at the function as the special guest.
Addressing the inaugural function, Professor Mannan welcomed the UNICEF's initiative and hoped that the workshop will play a significant role in adding values to the enhancement of the higher education in the country. He said C4D is very essential for the country's socio-economic development. The C4D Section Chief of the UNICEF Headquarters in New York Rafael Obregon presented a keynote paper in the workshop while Professor (Emeritus) of the Ohio University in the USA David Mould and C4D Section Chief of UNICEF, Bangladesh Neha Kapil also addressed it. UGC Member Professor Dil Afroza Begum and Secretary Md. Khaled, representatives from 16 public and private universities, senior officials of UNICEF and UGC were present on the occasion, among others.
Photo exhibition held at RU
A daylong photo exhibition was held on the Rajshahi University campus on Sunday.
Dr Amirul Islam, teacher of Folklore Department of the university inaugurated the exhibition at 12pm behind the university central library.
Chhatra Federation RU unit organized the exhibition.
Photographs of RU students participating in movements against evening course and different national issues were displayed in the exhibition.
Leaders and activists of RU unit Progressive Students Alliance were present at the inaugural ceremony.
