Repairing of roads before Eid

We expect authorities concerned to mitigate the sufferings of our homebound people as much as possible
Repairing of roads before Eid

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said that all damaged roads and highways will be repaired and readied before the holy Eid-ul-Azha for smooth and safe travelling of homebound passengers. The minister through his statement has taken on a challenge of epic proportions.

Unlike any time before, this year the overall condition of our roads and communications system is at its worst. On the one hand unprecedented heavy rains have caused serious damage to our roads and highways while on the other rail tracks in many different places have gone under water in the recent spate of floods. To be more specific, currently some 23 points of different national and regional highways stretching as long as one to three kilometres are under flood water. The flood water wiped away some 18 points of northern roads and highways. Moreover, the old unrepaired and damaged roads have become nearly unusable.

In tune with the minister we too hope,   all the damaged roads and highways will be repaired before the Eid for unimpeded movement of trains and motor vehicles – but in case if rain or flood resumes to disrupt the repair work, what then?

Reality of our changing weather and roads is clearly threatening to foil the minister’s pledge. However, we expect authorities concerned to mitigate the sufferings of our homebound people as much as possible. Also it is always usually before the two major festival seasons when the Roads, Bridges and Communications authority become pro-active in repairing the roads. Maintenance should be a routine task taking place throughout the year. Additionally, though the minister has prohibited cattle traders from setting up cattle markets indiscriminately but the prohibition must be strictly enforced throughout the country.

However, good that, trucks, covered vans; lorries along with other heavy vehicles will not be allowed to ply the highways three days before the Eid in order to reduce traffic jams but the traffic system too will have to be systematic. Besides, vigilance teams should also be active at bus terminals to check charging extra fare from the Eid holidaymakers, but given the poor condition of our roads it would be better to introduce some rescue teams in the risky and dangerous roads.

Lastly, though most of the journeys by bus and trains are expected to be not without hindrance but they should be made safer, so to avoid all unanticipated accidents. Not to forget the safer journey will have to be ensured on both ways – going home and also returning back of travellers.
