Landing Darboe struck a couple of goals, as the holders Abahani Limited returned to winning track in the Saif Power Battery Bangladesh Premier League football when they earned a hard fought 2-0 victory over Sheikh Russel.

It was Abahani’s third win out of five encounters after suffering a solitary goal defeat at the hands of Farashganj and a struggling goalless draw with BJMC in the previous matches while it was third consecutive defeat for Russel.     

Both Abahani and Russel were in trouble losing points in their previous matches, with the former in fourth position managing seven points from four matches and the latter in a more tricky situation with four points from five encounters.

Both sides looked desperate to win the match and began with aggressive mood right from the kick off. Abahani were on top for most of the first period, but found only one chance to score on half an hour mark. Abahani veteran right back Waly Faisal brilliantly curled a free kick on the 32nd minute which beat the Russel keeper but went out kissing the cross piece.

After a goalless first half, the post lemon break was also heading to right direction with attacks and counter attacks and the defense line of both sides dealt with successfully the strong moves before to turn into danger.

This time Russel took the first attempt on 58th minute when from a counter attack Khalekuzzaman’s thunderous right foot volley out of the blue from the penalty-arch was brilliantly denied by the Abahani goalkeeper Sohel.

Getting rid of the great threat, just four minutes later Abahani got the coveted lead through Landing Darboe converting a penalty on the 62nd minute when Russel keeper harshly adjudged to have brought down Rubel Miya in the area and referee Mizanur Rahman whistled for penalty against the keeper.  

Rubel Miya, who looked incredible with breaking the Russel defense very often, entered into danger area after receiving a Saad Uddin’s forward pass leaving behind the markers but goalkeeper missing the ball jumped on the feet of the forward and Landing successfully sent the spot kick into top corner of the net (1-0).

Abahani doubled the tally at the late hour when Darboe marked the target with a close range volley on a Rubel Miya pass from right side on 86th minute (2-0). Russel, despite fighting throughout 90 minutes, failed to bring the result in their favour or even to snatch a point.
