Mominul Haque was drafted into the Bangladesh’s first Test against Australia from August 27, replacing Mosaddek Hossain, a day after the top order was dropped from the squad. For the first time in his career, the left hand batsman was axed from Bangladesh’s 14-member squad but the
decision was reversed due to all-rounder Mosaddek’s eye problem yesterday. The decision to drop him was meted with harsh criticism since the stat proved the batsman has been the best in longer version format despite suffering bad patch in just last five innings.
Mominul averaged 46.88 in Test, the highest amongst the Bangladeshi batsman who played at least 20 Test matches. At home Test matches, his average is staggering 58.
The decision to include the left-handed batsman came as a big relief in country’s cricket fraternity as his omission from the opening Test squad became a matter of great debate. All the leading media outlets carried stories regretting his omission that they believed was an injustice for the technically sound batsman of the country.
The outcry appeared to have made an impact immediately and as a result BCB President Nazmul Hassan called the selectors Minhajul Abedin and Habibul Bashar and head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe (also member of the selection panel) for an explanation.
After a long discussion with the team management, Nazmul came out to face the media where he disclosed his disappointment regarding the entire incident.
“It was disappointing not to have Mominul in the Test squad,” Nazmul told reporters. “There is no doubt that he one of our best batsmen. When he was dropped from the ODI and T20 we wanted him to concentrate more on Test matches. We consider him as our Test specialist,” he added.
According to the BCB chief, Mominul is not someone who should be dropped because we believe he has a big Test career ahead and would justify his place in future.
“I don’t think that no one should think about his future because we will make sure of that.” The BCB boss believed that team management could have avoided the entire drama if they had made it a 15-member squad. “I don’t see any problem of keeping him in the squad. They could just make it a 15-member squad instead of 14-member squad.”
“Every cricket lovers felt bad about it and why should we do such a thing that would create such a repercussion.” Nazmul informed that head coach Chandika Hathurusingha would talk to Mominul to make the things easier for him. “I asked them why he was dropped and it looked he became a victim of circumstances for the series or the first Test match. Nazmul concluded the press conference by providing the news of Mominul’s inclusion when a journalist asked whether Mossadek will be fit as he is having an eye infection.
“Mominul is coming while Mosaddek is not playing both are true,’ he said. “He (Mosaddek) is not cleared from his eye infection yet so why do we need to take a player who is doubtful. So we are including Mominul in his place,’ he concluded.
