KHULNA: Speaker here have appreciated vital role of student cabinets at secondary schools and adolescent clubs for curbing child marriage across the country, reports BSS.
They expressed this view yesterday in a day-long ‘Experience Sharing Workshop on Accelerating Actions towards Ending Child Marriage (AECM) in Bangladesh’.
They added present government is working to end child marriage by 2021 for girls under age 15 and to end all child marriage by 2041.
School dropout rates are strongly related to child marriage, a pervasive practice in Bangladesh despite existing legislation banning it.
In this context, with the support of UNICEF Bangladesh, CARE Bangladesh has implemented this AECM project to address the underlying causes of child marriage in Dakop upazila in Khulna and Kishoreganj upazila in Nilphamari.
Department of Public Health and Engineering (DPHE) is assisting the project.
The workshop was held at CSS Ava Centre in the city with Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md. Abdus Samad, inaugurated as well as facilitated this experience sharing event, as the chief guest while Executive Engineer of Dhaka DPHE AHM Khalequr Rahman in the chair.
UNO of Dakop upazila Maruful Islam, Assistant Director (Planning and Development) of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) Dr A K M Khalilur Rahman, Chief of Khulna UNICEF Md. Kafil Uddin, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) specialist of UNICEF Md Shofiqul Alam, addressed as special guests.
In the workshop, Team Leader of the AECM Project Abdul Matin Shardar, recounts the highlights of the AECM Project achievements while delivering welcome speech.
The AECM project has greatly impacted on increased attendance of female students at school and greater awareness of child marriage issues, causes, consequences and actions, he said. Dakop Upazila chairman, Superintendent Engineer of Khulna DPHE, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, representative from CARE Bangladesh adolescent clubs, student cabinets, school management committees (SMCs), parents of the adolescents, local government representatives (UP Chairmen),
government officials, NGOs and civil society members, were present in the workshop.
