14 bronze statues seized

Customs officials seized 14 bronze statues at Benapole international check-post on Thursday night.

Sensing the presence of a patrol team of customs officials, a Bangladesh national who was coming from India ran away, leaving behind a bag at the customs check-post, said Joynal Hazari, Superintendent of Customs.

Later, the customs officials recovered the statues from the bag.

College student found dead

Police recovered the body of a college student from village Baruka in Phulbaria upazila of Mymensingh yesterday morning. He went missing three days back.

The deceased was Tajul Islam, 17, son of late Quari Shafir Uddin of village Baruka. Tajul was a second year student in Phulbaria Degree College.

Tajul went out of his house around 10 on Wednesday night and he did not return home, police sources said. Later, the victim’s family members informed police on Thursday.  

 Quoting victim’s mother Laily Begum, Sheikh Kabirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Phulbaria police station said unknown people poisoned fish of their pond some three months ago.

Later, Tajul lodged a complaint with Phulbaria police station accusing his neighbours Dudu Mia, his brother Nazrul Islam and some others for the crime, said the OC.  

There had been feuds with her neighbours on various issues including land for long, the OC said quoting Laily’s allegations.  Local people found the body of Tajul floating in a pond of the village in the morning and informed police.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Police suspected that Tajul might have been strangled to death following previous enmity.

Police detained victim’s neighbours Dudu Mia, 50, and his son Sohel Mia, 20, for interrogation.

Boy dies falling from bridge

NATORE: A boy died after being fallen from a bamboo bridge over Khalishadanga river in Boraigram upazila of the district yesterday, reports BSS.

Police identified the boy as Likhon, 9, of Pargopalpur village in the upazila. Likhon accidently fell down from the bamboo bridge and drowned while he was crossing it, local police officials said. On information, a team of local firefighting unit recovered his body from the river this noon after two hours of hectic efforts.

Female ‘hundi trader’ held

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a suspected female hundi trader along with Tk 7.27 lakh in Benapole Railway Station area in Sharsha upazila on Thursday afternoon.

Acting on a tip off, a team of BGB, led by Subedar M Safiqur Rahman conducted a drive at the railway station area around 3:45 pm.

During the drive, the BGB men arrested Shirina Begum Moni, 35, a resident of Boalia bazaar village, along with her four-year old son. After searching the hand bag of Moni, the BGB personnel recovered Tk 7.27 lakh from her possession.

A case was filed with Benapole Port Police Station in this connection.

Four held with yaba tablets

JOYPURHAT: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in two drives yesterday arrested four drug peddlers and seized 5,741 pieces of yaba tablets from their possession in Akkelpur upazila of the district, reports BSS.

The arrested were identified as Md Masum Parvej, 30, Md Imrul Qayes Rony, 30, Md Mamunur Rahman Shanto, 31 and Md Shafi Mondol, 30.

On a tip-off, a team of the RAB-5 conducted raids in Awalgari and Rail Station areas of the upazila and nabbed the four drug peddlers with the contraband drugs.

The RAB men also seized two motorcycles and three mobile phones from their possession.
