Two-day Zahir Raihan Film Festival begins today

Marking the birth anniversary of legendary filmmaker Zahir Raihan (August 19, 1935— January 30, 1972), a two-day film festival will begin today at the auditorium of Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital. With the slogan ‘Camera, ready for protest’, Dhaka City Sangshad of Udichi Shilpi Gosthi has organised the two-day film festival to mark the 82nd birth anniversary of Zahir Raihan, which will be observed tomorrow.

Cultural personality Syed Hasan Imam will inaugurate the festival while general secretary of Federation of Film Societies Belayet Hossain Mamun, Anal Rayhan (son of Zahir Raihan), and president of Udichi Udichi Shilpi Gosthi Dr Safiuddin Ahmed will discuss at the opening ceremony.    

After the discussion, Zahir Raihan-directed ‘The State is Born’ will be screened at 12pm, while Tauquir Ahmed’s ‘Oggatonama’ will be screened at 2:30pm, Kamar Ahmed Simon’s ‘Ekti Sutor Jobanbondi’ at 5pm and Tanvir Mokammel’s ‘Jibon Dhuli’ will be screened at 7pm.

Short film ‘Punorabritti’ will be screened at 10am, short film ‘Uposongher’ at 10:30pm and Zahidur Rahim Anjan’s full length feature film ‘Meghmollar’ will be screened at 11am on the closing day of the festival.

Zahir Raihan was a Bangladeshi novelist, writer and filmmaker. He is perhaps best known for his documentary Stop Genocide, made during the Bangladesh Liberation War. In 1960, Zahir Raihan made his directorial debut with the film ‘Kokhono Asheni’, which was released in 1961. In 1964, he made Pakistan’s first colour movie ‘Sangam’, and completed his first CinemaScope movie ‘Bahana’ the following year. His other popular films include – ‘Kancher Deyal’, ‘Behula’, ‘Anowara’ and ‘Jibon Theke Neya’, among others.
