A 100-year-old game of snakes, locally known as ‘Jhapang Khela’, was held at Boidanga village in Jhenidah sadar upazila yesterday. According to the organising committee, the snake play was arranged at Boidanga Monsha Temple ground. A total of 10 participants took part in the game where over 50 poisonous snakes were showed by the snake charmers.
Kamal Hossain, a college student of Ganna village said the game was very dangerous and interesting as well. Only brave men can participate in the game. “For the first time I am watching this kind of game. I heard about the game from my grandfather.” Snake charmer Uttam Biswas said, “My five generations have been showing this game.
I took part in the game in Jessore, Kushtia, Meherpur, Chuadanga, Magura, Faridpur, Rajbari and 20 other districts. This is my profession.
Five members of my family depend on the game. If we can play the game regularly, we can lead our life easily.”
Chief organiser and president of Boidanga Monsha Temple Prem Kumar said it is one of the traditional and famous games in the area. At least 15,000 people come from neighboring districts to see the play. Villagers used to organise the game regularly in the area 25 years back but now it’s a lost game in the area. At least 10 participants from Meherpur, Rajbari, Kushtia and Jhenidah participated in the game, he added.
