Private company takes initiatives to repair road

Bangladesh Honda Motors private Limited, a joint venture company of the Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation and Honda Motor Japan, has taken initiatives to repair  a regional road in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur district.

 The company started the maintenance works from Sunday last. It will completely repair the 10-km-long Mawna–Ozilabo Road and make it fit for use.Shah Mohammed Ashequr  Rahman, who heads the company's finance and commercial department, said: "We've taken initiatives to repair the road as part of our corporate social responsibility."

"The government allocation for such works can be used only by following a specific procedure. It takes some time. But we've decided to start the repair works immediately to reduce the plight of locals," he added.

 Kajua Hasee, a senior official of the company's production and planning division, said industrialists should take up such work to render benefit to the state as well as its citizens.

Khandaker Momtazul Islam, who heads the company's human resources and administration department, said the company will continue to take up such initiatives.

 Nasir Uddin George, a local social activist, said the initiative puts an example before other companies and organisations.  Abdus Sattar, 67, a local farmer, said that the road has been in a dilapidated condition for a long time. "It becomes worse in the rainy season," he added.a

Abdul Latif and Kamal Hossain, two other locals, said there are at least 10 industrial establishments beside the Maona–Ozilabo road. Workers and employees of these factories use this road to transport goods. If all factory owners come forward, this road will be repaired in no time, they added.

 When contacted, Abdul Jalil, the chairman of Sreepur upazila council, said tenders have been invited for the maintenance of the internal roads under the upazila parishad. "Many contractors have already been given work orders. But they are yet to the start the work due to the rainy season, " he added.
