AL activist hacked to death
Magura: An activist of ruling Awami League (AL) was hacked to death by rivals at Sablat village under Shalikha upazila over establishing supremacy in the area early Tuesday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahman Sabu, 60, son of Tafsir Molla.
Quoting family members, officer-in-charge of Shalikha Police Station Rabiul Islam said AL-backed chairman of Shaneswargati union parishad Siraj Uddin and rebel candidate Shamshur Rahman had a longstanding dispute over last UP election centring establishing supremacy in the area.
Abdur Rahman, supporter of incumbent chairman, came under attack allegedly by the rival group around 8:00 pm on Monday. The attackers hacked him with sharp weapons indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.
Later, he was taken to Magura 250-bed Sadar Hospital. He was then shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as per doctors’ advice where he succumbed to his injuries at 3:00 am on Tuesday.
The body was taken to Magura from Dhaka last night. A case was filed with Shalikha Police Station. However, none was arrested yet. Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
Nine held with 2,795 SIM cards
Bogra: Detectives in separate drives have arrested nine people along with some 2795 biometric registered Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards from different places in the district town, reports UNB.
Tipped off, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of the district conducted a drive at Katnapara in the district town on Monday noon and arrested four people, said superintendent of police of the district Asaduzzaman at a press conference on Tuesday.
The law enforcers also recovered 2370 SIM cards of mobile phone network Robi, 325 of Grameenphone, and 100 of Teletalk, said the SP, adding, all the SIM cards have been registered through biometric method.
Based on the information found from the arrestees, the DB team conducted another drive at Shibbati in the district town and arrested five others, the SP said.
During the primary interrogation, the arrestees said they collected biometric registered SIM to sell those to two traders of Dhaka and Sylhet to run illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) business.
Programme held to mark Nat’l Mourning Day in Kishoreganj
Kishoreganj: On the occasion of the National Mourning Day Rasel Ahmed Tuhin, son of honourable president of Bangladesh, eminent social worker and politician organised a programme commemorating the father of the Nation on Tuesday, says a press release.
During the programme named ‘Poneroi August er Shokgatha’ Abdul Jalil Sheikh, former officer-in-charge of Tungipara police station shared his experience of the burial of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Advocate Shohrab Uddin, deputy commissioner and police super of Kishoreganj District were also present at the programme. In the end, Rasel Ahmed said, “We will turn our sorrow into strength and build a prosperous nation which Bangabandhu dreamt of.”
Night guard killed
LALMONIRHAT: A gang of miscreants hacked a night guard to death during a robbery attempt at Krishi Unnayan Bank, Teesta Branch in the district in the early hours of yesterday, reports BSS.
Police said employees of the bank found the body of Abdur Rashid, 58, a resident in Teesta area and informed the matter to them. Rashid was a freedom fighter.
Police Super of Lalmonirhat SM Roshidul Haque said he might have been killed by the robbers when he tried to put up resistance against them.
However, the dacoits could not steal anything from the bank as they failed to break volt of the bank, the SP said.
A case has been filed in this connection.
Lightning kills 2 in Naogaon
Naogaon: Two people were killed and another person was injured in a lightning strike at Deluabari Bazar in Manda upazila yesterday, reports UNB.
Officer-in-charge of Manda Police Station M Anisur Rahman said a thunderbolt struck the trio around 12 noon when a group of people took shelter in a shade in the bazaar.
The lightning strike killed Shamsul Alam, 45, of Kirtali village on the spot and Altaf Hossain of Dodangi village in the upazila and Abul Kashem injured.
The injured were taken to Manda health complex where Altaf died.
‘Hundi trader’ held at Benapole

Members of Borger Guard Bangladesh in a drive arrested a suspected hundi trader along with Tk 28.50 lakh from Benapole Railway Station area in Sharsha upazila on Tuesday.
Tipped off, a team of BGB conducted the drive at Benapole Railway Station and arrested Sree Subrata Kumar Datta, 32, of Krishna Nogor village in Jhikargacha upazila, around 4:15 pm.
During the drive, BGB men recovered Tk 28.50 lakh from his possession, said Subeder Safiqur Rahman, company commander of 49 BGB battalion, adding, Subrata was returning from India with the illegal currencies.
A case was filed with Benapole Port Police Station in this connection.
Father, son electrocuted

A man and his son were electrocuted at Daupur village in Kalihati upazila of Tangail district on Tuesday morning.
The victims are Abdul Karim, 50, and his son Abu Darda, 22, residents of the same area.
Police said when they were working at a poultry firm, they came into contact with a live electric wire at about 11 am. Both of them died on the spot.
