About two hundred families of Zabra village under Ghior upazila in Manikganj have changed their life making ‘bana’, one kind of bamboo fence used to protect fish in water body. The people, who once lived life with penury and endured a miserable life, have brought solvency in their life selling Bana, reports BSS.
Most of the villagers are now financially solvent. Their children are going to school regularly and some of them are also helping their parents to make ‘bana’ in leisure time, local people said. The bamboo-made fence of Zabra village are being sold at different markets of 14 districts across the country including, Dhaka, Gazipur, Mymensingh, Gopalganj, Pabna, Satkhira, Brahmanbaria, Netrokona and Narsingdi.
During a visit to the village, this correspondent found that family members are busy with making Bana, reports BSS. Manobendra Rajbangshi of Zabra Majhipara said, “We have been making bana for about three decades.”
Ratan Rajbangshi, another inhabitant of the village, said about 120 families of the village were engaged in bana making. “We are earning Taka 5,000-7,000 per month. School-going boys and girls also earn money making bana,” he said.
Amena, 40, a housewife said, “I have been making bana with my family members since the beginning of my conjugal life. I can make two banas every day alongside completing my other household chores. I earn Taka 300-350 per day”. “We particularly remain busy from April to September every year,” she added. Purnima Rajbangshi and Masud Mia, students of class nine of a local secondary school, said they help their parents to make bana which gives their families extra financial support.
Ujjal Kumar Rajbangshi, one of the wholesale bana traders said, “The making cost of 9-15 square-feet bana is Taka 1,100 and they are sold in the market at Taka 1,250- Taka 1,300.”
