State Minister for Labour and Employment Md Mujibul Haque Chunnu yesterday urged garment owners to clear the festival bonus, salaries and arrears to the RMG workers before Eid-ul-Azha, reports UNB.
The junior minister came up with the call while addressing the 35th meeting of the crisis management core committee, which was formed to oversee the overall situation of industries and factories and labour unrest, at the conference room of his ministry.
The meeting was informed that the owners of the garment units affiliated with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) decided to give festival bonus to their workers before August 24 next, a handout said.
Chunnu hoped that all the garment owners will pay all arrears of the workers before Eid, saying if anyone fails to give workers’ salary due to financial constraints, they should take steps in consultation with their workers to avoid labour unrest before the religious festival of Muslims.
The meeting decided to grant the leave of the RMG workers in phases during Eid to keep the normal production of the factories on and avoid traffic congestion on highways as well.
Additional Secretary to the Labour and Employment Ministry Miah Abdullah Mamun, Director General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments Md Shamsuzzaman Bhuiyan, Labour Director Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal, Joint Secretary Khandaker Mustan Hossain and DIG of Industrial Police Md Nowsher Ali were, among others, present at the meeting.
