The present spell of heavy rain, which began in early August, is likely to subside from Thursday morning. This would be good news for the thousands trapped in floodwaters in the country’s northern plains.
Rain will be there but with less intensity, meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallick told The Independent yesterday (Tuesday).
However, the Met Office warning remains for landslides in the hills of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions in the next 24 hours, beginning at 6pm yesterday. There are chances of moderately heavy rain at most places there, with light to moderate rain expected at many places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal divisions, the weatherman said.
The forecast for heavy rain in the foothills of the Himalayas, both in the north-east and the north-west, remains unchanged, Mallick said, quoting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
If the rain subsides there, the major rivers flowing to the downstream in Bangladesh will also be slowing down, Sazzad Hossain, executive engineer at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), said.
However, both Mallick and Sazzad agreed that it may take time for the floods to subside in Bangladesh, as the rivers may rise in the upstream with more rain.
The rate of slowing down will take time for the Ganges-Padma and the Brahmaputra-Jamuna, Sazzad noted.
The Jamuna fell by one cm at Bahadurabad in Jamalpur yesterday afternoon, but was still flowing 132cm above its danger level. It was because the Brahmaputra in Assam was slowing down.
The FFWC watcher said the Teesta, another woe of the north, was also slowing down. But the Ganges-Padma was expected to rise in the next four days, flowing above its danger at Goalundo and Bhagyakul, Sazzad added.
