Various governments, non-government institutions, socio-cultural and political organisations in Rajshahi, Chittagong, Barisal and Rangpur observed the National Mourning Day with due solemnity and fervour.
The day’s programms began in cities with hoisting of national flags and black flags at half-mast, placing of wreaths at the portraits of Bangabandhu, offering special prayers and bringing out mourning processions.
Our Rajshahi Correspondent reports: Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi arranged a programme of discussion meeting, Doa Mahfil and art competition at Shilpkala Academy Auditorium marking the day. Meanwhile, Rajshahi city unit of Bangladesh Awami League hoisted the party flags at half-mast in the morning. Later they placed tribute at portrait of Father of the Nation and four national leaders at their party office. They also brought out a mourning rally led by Dablu Sarker, Secretary of AL Rajshahi city unit from Kumarpara area and paraded various streets of the city.
On the other hand, a large number of people including government and non- government officials, freedom fighters, political leaders and socio-cultural activists were present at the meeting.
At Bangabandhu Chattar (Alupatti) in the city, portrait of Father of the Nation and four national leaders were garlanded by various organizations including Sammilita Sangskritic Jote, district unit of Bangabandhu Parishad, Bangabandhu Prokoushali Parishad, Bangbandhu RUET Parishad and Ela Mitra Sangskritic Sangha.
Staff Reporter adds from Barisal: National Mourning Day, marking the 42nd death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed in the city yesterday.
The programmes of the day included Quran Khawani, Milad and Doa, discussion meeting on life and achievements of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib, holding condolence rally, children art competition, blood donation, feeding the poor, cultural function, poetry recitation and placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, Abdur Rob Serniabat and other victims of the August 15. BSS adds from Rangpur: The National Mourning Day and the 42nd martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed in the city and district with befitting manner.
The district administration, Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC), Awami League (AL), its associate organisations, educational institutions, government departments and other organisations chalked out elaborate programmes in observance of the day. Later, wreaths were placed at portrait of Bangabandhu at the Mural of Bangabandhu at DC Mour point followed by observance of one-minute silence, wearing black badges and offering special munajat there.
Later, a huge mourning procession led by divisional and district level government officials and with participation of thousands of people from all walks in the society was brought out in the city streets. Milad mahfils were organised, special munajat and prayers offered at mosques, mandirs, churches, pagodas and other religious institutions seeking divine blessing for the departed soul of Bangabandhu and other martyrs of August 15 in 1975.
District Information Office screened documentary films titled 'Chironjib Bangabandhu', 'Osomapta Mohakabbyo', 'Amader Bangabandhu', 'Swadhinota Amar Swadhinota' and 'Swadhinota Amader Ki Kore Halo' at different places. Rangpur Betar Kendra aired special programmes and the local dailies published special supplements on Bangabandhu. Islamic Foundation organised programmes including recitation from the Holy Qur'an, Hamd-Na'at and Doa mahfil and discussion on the life and deeds of Bangabandhu at its auditorium in the city.
