Erosion turns 240 families homeless in two days
Rangpur: Some 240 families in six unions of Gangachhara upazila were left marooned as the erosion of the Teesta River took a serious turn in the last two days, reports UNB.
The affected unions are Kolkond, Nohali, Laxmitary, Gojoghonta, Morneya and Alambiditor.
Char Shankardha and Char Chilakhal Government primary schools in Laxmitary and Kolkond unions also went into the gorge of the river, leaving students in an uncertain situation.
The homeless people took shelter in a river protection embankment where they were passing their days amid great sufferings.
Upazila Chairman Asaduzzaman Bablu and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Aminul Islam visited the affected areas on Monday and distributed dry foods among the erosion victims.

Man beaten dead in Jhenidah

A man was beaten to death at Panka village in Jhenidah sadar upazila on Monday over a trifling matter.
The deceased was identified as Aziz, 50, son of Kashem Mandal, a farmer of the village.
Emdadul Haque, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said Aziz was pushed by a bicycle ridden by Azimuddin Mandal while he was going to a local hat in the afternoon.
Later, Aziz slapped Azimuddin.
Following the incident, Azimuddin along with his several associates beat Aziz at night, leaving him critically injured.
Later, he was sent to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 9pm.
Police also arrested two people in connection with the murder.

Absconding lifer arrested

Police in a drive arrested a life term imprisonment convict from Chachra area of the district town on Monday noon.
The arrested was identified as Alamgir Hossain alis Alam, of Chachra Colony para area in the town.
He was an absconding convicted lifer in a case of Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Sub-inspector Asaduzzaman of Kotwali Model Police Station said on secret information a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested him.

Youth found dead

Police recovered the body of an unidentified youth from Mymensingh town’s Akua Bypass area yesterday morning.
Quoting local people as saying, Abul Monshur Ahmed, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Kotwali police station said some brickfield workers found the unidentified body aged about 22 beside the bypass around 10am and informed police.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.  The body bore injury marks on its back, said the OC. Police detained a brickfield worker Mofazzol Hossain for interrogation.
The identity of the body could not be known immediately.

Liquor seized at Benapole
Benapole: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 47 bottles of foreign liquor from Raghunathpur border area on Monday night, reports UNB.
BGB camp commander Nayeb Subedar Shahid said that on secret information, a team of BGB conducted a drive in the area at night and seized the liquor worth Tk 2 lakh.
