It has become a prime imperative now to have adequate public hostels for single working women in the urban areas of the country including the capital. In absence of such facilities, these women are facing various problems. The existing public and private hostels for women in the capital are neither safe nor healthy. This forces many working women to try renting flat in their personal arrangement in groups. But owners of flats are not inclined to give their flats in rent to them simply because they are single and they might get in trouble. This is true for bachelors also. But there are many flat-owners who take this helplessness of working women as an opportunity to fleece them.
With the number of single working woman is increasing the country, the dormitory problem is getting acuter in the cities where their workplaces are situated. We always talk about women empowerment and the government is also proactive about it, but in making the life of single working women easier, the government is not walking the talk.
According to a report of this newspaper, the government is planning to construct one dormitory for working women in each district gradually depending on the availability of khas land. Building a hostel in each district is a good idea, and the government should work on it sincerely taking it as a priority. But it is an urgent matter that the metropolis, more importantly Dhaka, should immediately have adequate number of safe dormitories for women with all kinds of facilities. As our society is restrictive and traditional, the issue of safety for working women is a major issue.
Since more and more single women are joining the workforce, there is no point in neglecting the matter. According to Bangladesh Quarterly Labour Force Survey 2015-16 of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, some 44, 30,000 women are working in urban areas, including Dhaka. And women’s participation in work has to be encouraged by making safe dormitory facilities available for them. It is really a matter of great worry that in Dhaka there are only three government hostels for working women at Nilkhet, Mirpur and Khilgaon—with only 893 seats. According to news, construction works of vertical extension of two hostels in Mirpur and Khilgaon are underway. But this would not prove enough. It is necessary to establish several multi-storey buildings at different places for accommodating working women right away.
