Article 57 not to hamper press freedom: Anisul

UNB

Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday said article 57 of the ICT Act will help check cyber crimes and not to hamper the ‘real journalism’ at all, reports UNB. “Don’t consider the article 57 as an article over journalists’ offences...the article 57 won’t put journalists into trouble at all. As it’s not clear now, it’s being misused,” he told a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU). He said cyber crime is on the rise in the country

keeping pace with the advancement of ICT, but now it has been known that journalists have objections to the article 57.

Taking their objections into consideration, Anisul Huq said the government has taken an initiative to pass a new bill - ‘Digital Security Bill’ - where the article 57 will be inserted after making it clear.

There will be no law, which will be unfriendly to journalists,” he said, adding that now anyone will not be able to file a case easily under article 57 as some changes have already brought in procedures.

About the recent comments of Finance Minister AMA Muhith on the 9th wage board of journalists, the Law Minister said he will talk to the Finance Minister and the Information Minister over the issue soon.

Asked whether there is any progress in the investigation into journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder case, Anisul said the probe is on and it will be completed soon.
