Satisfactory progress made: Anisul

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said there was a satisfactory progress in bringing fugitive killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman back to the country, reports BSS. “A satisfactory progress has been made in bringing back the fugitive killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,” he told the news agency yesterday.

Referring to the meeting held early this month with the outgoing high commissioner of Canada BenoOt-Pierre Laram,e, the law minister said that they had discussion on ways of repatriating Noor Chowdhury to Bangladesh.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan earlier told the news agency that the government obtained updated information on all six fugitive killers of Bangabandhu.

“Legal and diplomatic efforts are now underway to bring back home all the fugitive killers of Bangabandhu who have taken shelter in different countries”, the home minister said.

He said the taskforce formed by the government on March 28, 2010, headed by Law Minister Anisul Huq, has been working on this issue.

Two law firms have already been engaged by the government in the United States of America (USA) and Canada for bringing back home the fugitive convicted killers Col (dismissed) Khandker Abdur Rashid and Maj (retd) Noor Chowdhury respectively. Efforts are also on to repatriate Risaldar Muslemuddin Khan, who is believed to be in Germany.

The authorities, however, has not confirmed yet about the whereabouts of three other fugitive killers Lt Col (relieved) Shariful Haque Dalim, Maj (retd) Rashed Chowdhury and Capt Abdul Majed.

Earlier on November 19, 2009, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court verdict, confirming capital punishment for 12 people, including the six, for killing Father of the Nation and most of his family members on the dreadful night of August 15, 1975.

Five other convicts in the case - Syed Farooq Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Bazlul Huda, AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed, and Mohiuddin Ahmed - were hanged on January 27, 2010. Another killer, Aziz Pasha, died in Zimbabwe in 2001.

The country had earlier launched a campaign to track down and take back six fugitive ex-army officers hiding abroad to escape death sentences for the August 15, 1975 assassination.

As part of the legal procedure, the present government initiated the confiscation of non-movable properties and freeze bank accounts of the convicted killers, the home minister said.

On government’s request, Interpol also issued several red warrants to track down the absconding assassins and 1975 plotters.
