BNP yesterday alleged that the government is trying to mount pressure on Chief Justice SK Sinha to change the Supreme Court verdict that annulled the 16th amendment to the constitution, reports UNB. "You (AL leaders) are creating pressure on the Chief Justice to change the verdict by force. You're openly asking him to change the verdict," said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Speaking at a milad and doa mahfil at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, he further said, "We don't know what the Chief Justice and the Appellate Division will do. We would like to say people won't accept such unjust practice."
The BNP leader also warned that people will establish a pro-people government defeating the misrule with their united efforts. Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, BNP's student body, arranged the programme seeking early recovery of Khaleda Zia who underwent a surgery in her right eye in London on Tuesday.
Fakhrul called upon the government and the ruling party leaders not to try to exert any pressure on the judiciary. "Come to the right path shunning your aggressive words and efforts to destroy democratic institutions."
He alleged that the ministers and the ruling party leaders are 'spitting venom' at the Chief Justice following the Supreme Court's historic verdict on the 16th amendment. "It can neither be a political nor a democratic language the way the government and Awami League leaders are talking about the Chief Justice and the judiciary,” the BNP leader observed.
Referring to media, Fakhrul said their party has got worried as Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader went to the Chief Justice SK Sinha’s residence on Saturday night and took dinner there. “We’ve got surprised by the visit as they were attacking the Chief Justice with aggressive and indecent words.” The BNP leader urged his party colleagues to remain alert as the government has been hatching a new plot to obliterate democracy.
He also called upon them to get united to put up a strong resistance against the current ‘autocratic’ regime.
