NU degree exams postponed
The National University (NU) has postponed yesterday’s degree examinations due to countrywide floods.
Foyjul Karim, director (Public Relations) of NU, told UNB that the NU authorities have postponed yesterday's scheduled examinations for degree students for floods.
Discussion on Bangabandhu held at IU
ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY: A discussion on Bangabandhu was held at Islamic University (IU) on Saturday marking the National Mourning Day.
The university authorities organised the discussion on “The Role of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the development of higher education in Bangladesh” at Birshreshtha Hamidur Rahman Auditorium of the university.
Professor Abdul Mannan, Chairman of University Grant Commission (UGC), addressed the function as the chief guest with IU Vice-chancellor Professor Dr M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari in the chair. University Pro-VC Professor Dr M Shahinoor Rahman and Treasurer Professor Dr M Selim Toha spoke as the special guests. Professor Dr Md Saidur Rahman, Chairman of Folklore Studies Department and Armin Khatun conducted the programme.
Tree plantation campaign held at JU
SAVAR: A daylong tree plantation campaign was held at Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday for further beautification of the university and maintaining ecological balance on the campus.
JU Rotaract Club (JURC) carried out the campaign and planted a total of 20 types of flower plants on Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall premises on the campus as part of the programme. The Hall Provost Professor Kabirul Bashar inaugurated the campaign as chief guest while Professor of JU Zoology Department Md Monwar Hossain was present as the special guest at the inaugural function. JURC President Zubair Al Mahmud and General Secretary Mumtarin Zannat Oishee were present on the occasion, among others.
National Mourning Day programme at RU
The authorities of Rajshahi University (RU) have chalked out a daylong programme marking the National Mourning Day on the campus on August 15, says a press release.
To commemorate the day the universities authorities will arrange programmes including hoisting flag, mourning procession, placing wreath, discussion, offering special prayer and art exhibition for children.
According to a press release, the programmes will be started with hoisting national flag half mast atop every academic, administrative buildings and dormitories and placing wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at 8.00am on August 15.
Seminar on Nat’l budget held at JU
A day-long seminar titled ‘National Budget: Historic Context and Contemporary Analysis’ was held at the seminar room of Zahir Raihan Auditorium on Jahangirnagar University on Sunday. Arthashastro Pathchakra, a teacher student study group of JU Economics department organised the seminar while Professor Anu Muhammad was in the chair.
Addressing the seminar, JU Pro-vice-chancellor and also the senior teacher of the department Amir Hossain said, “There is always a mixed reaction among the politicians centering national budget. The as usual phenomenon is that the ruling party praised while opposition criticised the budget. “The social and economic affairs are closely related to the development. Implementation of development project becomes easy if it is possible to collect money from the loan defaulter”, he added.
Students of the department including Md. Monir Hossain, Rafiqul Islam, Istiak Raihan, Zayed Bin Sattar presented article on the seminar while Prof Shorminda Nilormi and Prof Dr. Akter Mahmud discussed on the topic.
Seminar on ELT or literature held at NDUB
The Department of English Language and Literature (ELL), Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB), arranged a seminar on ‘ELT or Literature? Career Options for Graduating Students’ on its premises on recently, says press release.
Dr Fakrul Alam, Professor (retired) of the University of Dhaka conducted the seminar.
He said “There is no debate between ELT and Literature for deciding which is best for career, as he believes whether one chooses ELT or Literature, one must be skilled in English, to be specific, in reading, listening, writing, and speaking. He terms it as Communicative English which means “English in use”.
Father Adam S Pereira, Registrar and Chairman of ELL, NDUB, thanked Dr Fakrul Alam for sharing his experience to motivate the students and handed over a souvenir to the celebrated Professor Dr Fakrul Alam at the end of the programme.
The event ended with the demonstrations by Lecturer of ELL, NDUB, Habiba Akhter and Ahmed Tahsin Shams, on course outlines of ELT and Literature, respectively.
Seminar on ‘Syed Ali Ashraf’ held at IU
ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY: A seminar on ‘The contribution of Syed Ali Ashraf’ was held at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia recently. IU Al-Hadith and Islamic Studies Department organised the seminar at the university’s Art’s Faculty building in the morning.
IU Theology Faculty dean Prof Dr Abul Barakat M Faruk attended the seminar as chief guest while Prof Shariful Islam and Prof AHM Nurul Islam, addressed the seminar as chief discussants with the departmental head Prof Dr M Nasir Uddin in the chair.
M Alamgir Kabir, a PhD fellow of the department, presented the article supervised by Al-Hadith and Islamic Studies Department Professor Dr Syed Maksudur Rahman.
‘Training enhances professional skill’
RANGPUR: Vice-chancellor (VC) of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Professor Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah on Sunday said training always broadens knowledge, enhances capacity and professional skill of journalists.
“The journalists should make proper application of the skills they acquire from various training courses and workshops in filing news reports with impartiality to bring a positive change in the society,” he said. Professor Kalimullah came up with the observations while addressing the launching ceremony of a two-day training workshop styled 'Vibrant Journalism in Bangladesh' at Heyat Mamud Bhaban on the campus as the chief guest.
He also laid emphasis on imparting more training to students of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of BRUR to raise their professional skill.
