SM Sultan’s birth anniversary observed in Narail

Renowned artist SM Sultan’s 93rd birth anniversary was observed in a befitting manner at his birth place in Narail yesterday. SM Sultan Foundation and the district administration jointly celebrated the occasion amid an elaborate programme at Shishu Swarga auditorium in the town. The programme included Quran Khwani, placing wreaths at the grave of the legendary artist, an art competition, discussion on Sultan’s life and works and prize giving ceremony. Over 200 children participated in the art competition. Narail Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Emdadul Haque Chaudhury attended the programme as the chief guest while deputy director of Local Government Department Md Siddiqur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) MD.  Kamrul Arif, ADC Md. Mahbubur Rahman, Sultan Art College Principal Professor Ashok Kumar Sheel and Zila Parishad member and freedom fighter Saifur Rahman Hilu, among other, took part in the discussion.

Man ‘commits suicide after killing daughter’ in Sirajganj

Sirajganj: A man allegedly committed suicide by jumping under a moving train at Karnasuti near Jamtail Railway Station in Kamarkhand upazila on Wednesday, three days after the murder of her daughter, reports UNB. Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said Saidur Rahman Badal, 41, of Jagatgati village in Sadar upazila, jumped under Dhaka-bound ‘Silk City Express’ from Rajshahi around 10:30 am and died on the spot. On information, railway police recovered the body and sent it to local hospital morgue. On Sunday, Saidur’s daughter Sathi Khatun, a college student, was hacked to death allegedly by miscreants. During primary interrogation, Saidur gave irrelevant information to police. He was also asked to go the police station today morning for further interrogation. Police suspected that he might have link with the murder of his daughter.

 

Lightning strike kills one

A farmer was killed and two others injured in lightning strike at Fakirganj in Nilphamari sadar upazila yesterday.

The deceased was Manik Hossain, 30, son of Abdur Rahim of the village.

Locals sources said lightning struck them while they were planting Aman seedlings in a field during rain at noon.

The injured women Majeda Begum, 55 and Afroza Begum, 27 were admitted to sadar upazila health complex. Chairman of the concerned union parishad

confirmed the incident.

 

Mugger arrested with arms

Police arrested a mugger along with two arms and two rounds of bullets in Chuadanga district on Wednesday.  

The arrestee is Abdul Aziz, of village Gorchapra in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga district.

Police Super Nizamuddin said a team of detective branch of police was going to Alamdanga by a microbus on Wednesday night. When they arrived Ruakuli village, some muggers intercepted the microbus for snatching. At one stage, DB police caught hold one of them with a shooter gun and one round of bullet. A case was filed with Alamdanga police station.

Meanwhile, raiding Goyeshpur area in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga district police seized a pistol and one round of bullet in an abandoned position at a mango orchard of one Atiar Rahman of the village. A case was filed with Jibannagar police station in this connection.

Early marriage bid foiled

 A schoolgirl was saved from early marriage following timely intervention of Shibganj upazila administration at Kamtara Charangari village in Shibganj upazila of Bogra district yesterday evening.   

Police and local sources said marriage of Samsunnahar, 12, daughter of Dhalu Miah of the village was set to be solemnised with a young man of Noldubi of the same union yesterday. Parents took all preparations for the marriage.

On information, a police team, led by Buriganj Union Parishad Chairman Md Abdul Gafur rushed to the bride's house and stopped the marriage.
