Hundreds left homeless

Erosion by Muhuri River

Erosion by the Muhuri River has rendered 100 families homeless in seven unions under Songazi upazila of Feni district. For the last few day erosion has taken serious turn in the district. About 100 meters long guide embankment of Sonagazi has been devoured by the Muhuri River. Local alleged that due to illegal sand lifting and construction of unplanned dykes in the middle of the river are also the reasons of the severity of erosion.   

Many villages Amribad and Sadar union in Sonagazi upazila have already went under water. According to sources, standing crops on 200 acres of land, homesteaded on 120 acres of land, 10 educational institutes, saw mills, and religious institutions have been washed away within a very short time.

Erosion took place so speedily that people did not get time to shift their belongings to safe places. Shelter less people are passing their days and nights with extreme sufferings under the open sky.   

Some of them took shelter on the embankments and the houses of their relatives. Some other erosion prone areas have become vulnerable, sources added.

Some villagers alleged that dishonest people lifted sand from the embankment, as a result, vast areas are being devoured by the river everyday, leaving hundreds of people homeless.

The main effected area are Purbo Char Krishnajoypur, Charlamchhi Dubba, Purba Sonapur, Badamtoli , Motiganj, Char Khandaker, Stabaria.

Amirabad Union Chairman Jahirul Alam and UNO Minhazur Rahman along with others visited the effected areas. The UNO told The Independent that deputy commissioner of Feni was informed of erosion. Steps will be taken to combat erosion very soon. They assured of relief materials to the effected people. The UNO also urged the Water Development Board to take proper steps to check erosion.
