A parliamentary watchdog yesterday recommended that the Environment and Forest Ministry should not allow any permanent structure on the government land leased for social afforestation, reports BSS. It also asked the ministry to take steps for renewing the lease agreement of the land and collecting the land fee at a certain rate every year. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment and Forests Ministry came up with the recommendations at its 36th meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with its chairman M Hasan Mahmud in the chair.
The parliamentary body asked the ministry to take measures so that any permanent structure can in no way be set up in the land given for social afforestation. It asked the Department of Environment to inform the local government and other agencies about the reasons behind the landslides in hilly regions and measures to prevent those. Committee members Deputy Minister for Environment and Forests Abdullah Al Islam Jakob, Md Nobi Newaz, Tipu Sultan, Md Yeasin Ali and Merina Rahman attended the meeting.
