The country received $1.387billion in remittance in July of the current year, reports UNB. Bangladesh Bank statistics reveal
that the four state-owned commercial banks—Agrani, Janata,
Rupali and Sonali—received $413.65 million from the expatriate Bangladeshis while four state-owned specialised banks got
$17.43 million.
The maximum remittance came through the private commercial banks who brought $940.88 million while the nine foreign banks only $15.08 million. Among the private commercial banks, Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) led the remittance earning as it received the highest remittance of $356.62 million, followed by National Bank Limited (NBL) with $65.69 million.
Of the state-owned banks, Agrani Bank received $148.75 million, Sonali Bank $123.55 million, Janata Bank $120.18 million and Rupali Bank $21.17 million. Among other private banks who are in the leading positions in earning remittance include Uttara Bank ($57.96m), Pubali Bank ($52.77 m), Dutch-Bangla Bank ($46.60m), Bank Asia ($44.64m), Trust Bank ($23.48m), Prime Bank ($36.44 million), BRAC Bank ($31.44 m) and AB Bank ($16.97m).
Although the government allowed establishing these banks with high hope, the NRB banks showed a poor performance in earning the remittance from the expatriates in July as usual.
Of the three NRB banks, NRB Bank received $0.08m while NRB Commercial Bank got $1.08m and NRB Global Bank received $0.05m in remittance from non-resident Bangladeshis during the period.
