Buses go off Natore-Bogra route protesting extortion

Natore: Plying of buses remained stopped from Wednesday night on Natore-Bogra and other routes in the country’s northern region as the District Bus Owners Association enforced an indefinite bus strike protesting realisation of extortion on the route, reports UNb.

Sajedul Islam Sagar, general secretary of Natore Bus Owners Association, said the movement of buses on the routes of Natore-Bogra-Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj remained suspended from Wednesday night following rampant extortion from the passenger buses in Singra upazila of the district.

The Rajshahi and Bogra Bus Owners associations took the decision to stop plying of the vehicles on the route protesting the incident, causing untold sufferings to thousands of passengers.

Worker killed in tire explosion

Jessore: A motor worker was killed and another injured when a tire of a truck exploded while putting air into it at Mudli intersection in the district town on Wednesday, reports UNB.

Local people said the incident took place around 9:30 pm when a tire of a truck exploded with a big bang while pushing air into it, leaving Yunus Ali, 45, hailing from Jhenidah and Hossain Ali, 20, two workers of ‘Rimon Vulcanizing’ shop injured.

Later, they were taken to local hospital where the doctors declared Yunus dead.

Hossain was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Body recovered in Lalmonirhat

Police recovered the body of a youth from the Teesta River yesterday in Rajpur area of Lalmonirhat sadar upazila.

Touhidul Islam Shuvo, 18, son of Shawkat Ali and also a student of Lalmonirhat Government College at village Balatari of sadar upazila drowned in the Teesta River on the 21st of July while taking bath along with his four friends. After the incident firefighters conducted drive in the river but could not rescue him. Local people and civil defense divers also searched him but, in vain. After two weeks of the incident his dead body was seen floating in the river at Rajpur yesterday.

Police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. Deceased’s father filed a general dairy with Lalmonirhat police station after he went missing.

Two minor boys drown

BOGRA: Two minor boys drowned in a pond at Moidanhata village under Shibganj upaila of the district yesterday morning, reports BSS.

The deceased was identified as Shovon, 6, son of Maher Ali and Nahid, 6, son of Moinul, residents of the same area.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shibganj Model Police Station Sahid Mahamud Khan said Shovon and Nahid fell into the pond while they are playing beside nearby the house at about 11 am and drowned. Later, family members found the children floating in the pond.

24 arrested in Dinajpur

DINAJPUR: Police in an overnight arrested 24 people, including eight drug traders and recovered 300 pieces of Yaba tablets, 18 bottles of Phensidyl syrup and 500 liters of locally-made liquor from different areas of the district, reports BSS.

During the drives, Dinajpur Sadar police arrested 10, including eight drug traders with 300 pieces of Yaba tablets, 18 bottles of Phensidyl syrup and 500 liters of locally-made liquor, Hakimpur Thana police arrested six persons, Ghoraghat police arrested three and Parbatipur Thana police arrested five accused.

Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added.
