Bank official jailed in Ctg
A Chittagong court on sentenced three persons including one Pubali Bank cashier to fourteen years imprisonment each on charges of embezzling around Taka 93 lakh, three decades back.
Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Meer Ruhul Amin pronounced the verdict in absentia.
The court also asked the convicts to pay back the money in three installments, in default, to suffer one year more imprisonment each.
The convicts are S M Golam Khaleque, city's north Patenga Branch Cashier of Pubali Bank Ltd., Abu Hossain and S M Rafique both proprietors of Messrs Tenico Industries Ltd. The court also acquitted three others as they were found innocence.

Shops fined Tk 1.24 lakh
The regional office of Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution (BSTI) fined a total of 18 shop-owners in Rajshahi Taka 1.24 lakh during the last month of July for selling and manufacturing adulterated food items.
BSTI in association with respective district administration conducted 16 mobile courts and found selling of substandard and unhygienic food items violating BSTI rules and regulations.
The court also realised Taka 1.24 lakh from the shop owners during the drive.
Altab Hossain, Director of BSTI, said the regional office has stepped up its drives against the manufacturer of substandard and adulterated food items. Such drives will continue in the days to come for the greater interest of the people, he said.

Seminar on shipping Aug 27
An international seminar on 'Strategies for Professional Development of Seafarars in Global Shipping' will be held at Hotel Redisson Blue in the capital on August 27.
To be organized by Department of Shipping, the seminar will be attended by Kitack Lim, secretary general of International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, as the guest of honour.
Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan disclosed this at an inter-ministerial meeting held at the meeting room of his ministry on Wedensday, said an official release.
The speakers, in the seminar, will focus on how to increase employment opportunities for Bangladeshi sailors by improving their skills, Khan said.

Man punched to death in Comilla
A peasant was punched to death allegedly by his neighbour following dispute over a trifling matter at Bangara in Comilla on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Kalon Mia, 48, son of late Abdur Rashid Mia of the village.
Quoting locals, officer in charge of Debidar Police Station M Mizanur Rahman said Kalon Mia was cutting a tree branch of his neighbour that fell on the roof of his house in the afternoon. Following the incident, neighbour Abdur Raof and his family members obstructed him, triggering a quarrel.

Death anniv of  Ghazi Lutfur Rahman today
The 15th death anniversary of Air Commodore Ghazi Lutfur Rahman will be held today.
On the occasion, Qurankhwani and destitute feeding programme has been arranged in the capital, says a press release.
He was commissioned in the Air Force in 1960. During his illustrious career, he held positions as Director Armed Forces Division and Director Agrani Bank, among many others.
Relatives, friends and admirers have been requested to pray for the salvation of the departed soul.
