Rise in WASA water price

The water supplied by WASA is extremely polluted and a threat to public health

Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has raised the price of water again. In line with the new price, the citizens will have to pay Tk 10.5 per 1,000 litres for household connections in place of Tk 10. For commercial users the price will go up to Tk 33.6 from Tk 32 per 1,000 litres.  It is undoubtedly a bad piece news for the residents of the capital city. The WASA authority has done it for the third time in the past 13 months.

Raising water price repeatedly is illogical, to say the least. According to WASA, rise in the cost of producing water and the related expenditure has forced them to raise the price of water. The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has protested the rise in the price of water. There is no need to raise the price of water if the mismanagement and corruption in the organisation is reduced. It is imperative for the WASA authority to ensure transparency and accountability regarding its services to the taxpayers. The quality of water is also questionable. Who can say that the consumption of water supplied by WASA will not imperil public health? There is no logic in raising the price of water time and again.

The water supplied by WASA is extremely polluted and a threat to public health. This cannot be used unless boiled or purified in other way. There are clay, filth, dirt, algae and even insects and earthworms in the water supplied by WASA. The WASA authority should have considered it seriously before raising the price of water. WASA cannot raise the price without ensuring the quality of water.

What is disturbing is that WASA raises the price of water unilaterally without taking the opinion of its customers. According to the consumers rights law, the authority should honour the opinion of the consumers. Before raising the prices of gas and electricity mass hearing is arranged. Why no such arrangement by WASA regarding this? This question assails the consumers. The management board of WASA does it at its own discretion. It does not augur well. The raise in the price of water in such a way cannot be accepted. WASA should reconsider its decision in the interest of the consumers.
