Touhidur Liton struck on 77th minute as champions Abahani Limited saw a big blow in the very second match of the Saif Power Battery Bangladesh Premier League yesterday when they suffered a solitary goal defeat.
Held at the rain affected Bangabandhu Natiional Stadium, Abahani Limited despite playing with dominance throughout 90 minutes time and also went closer for several times failed to mark the target for once while the side post denied two efforts.
Abahani suffered the defeat after 28 matches when they were unbeaten champions in the previous edition of the league and were also kept the momentum in the Federation Cup, though making the league with a winning note after a struggling 3-2 victory over Saif Sporting, failed to survive in the second game.
Farashganj, who returned to the league after suffering a one season suspension, also forced Abahani Limited to share points in the first leg of the 2014-15 season with a 0-0 draw, though went down by 3-0 in the second leg.
It was something difficult for both the sides to play their usual game, as due to more than an hour downpour before the match, the BNS became so much slippery and heavy, as the players could not keep the ball possessions, failed to control themselves and accurate the passes.
Abahani played with full domination in the first half and was on target for only twice but were aimless, one with Rubel Mea’s effort from top of the box went far over the cross bar at the midway of the first half and another one on 36th from Saad Uddin’s shot went outside the side post.
After the goalless first half, the traditional Sky Blues (were all yellow on the day) made the second half afresh and also pressed huge pressure on the Old Dhaka outfit right from beginning of the session also made some real threats to score goals.
Emeka Darlington had a very good chance to push a Rubel Mea’s right side cross on 47th minute but the Nigerian failed to push the ball being almost unmarked very nearer to the goal line and on 53rd minute from a combined attack, Rubel Mea’s angular attempt shattered the far post.
Farashganj, who were for most of the time at the receiving side and were passing hectic time to deal with the Abahani’s strong attacks got better in the last ten minutes when their attacking side were exhilarated as veteran coach Abu Yusuf made a vital change replacing their Nigerian forward Chinedu Mathhew and Tauhidur Liton scored a goal against the run of the match (1-0).
Tauhidur successfully found the net when he took the opportunity of Abahani’s defense lapse on 77th minute when it was the first and the most strong attack from Farashganj, though another golden opportunity was came to their in the last minute of five minutes injury time.
But from a counter attack, Mathew failed to contact a Tuhin’s cross when he was fully free inside the danger area.
