In the backdrop of 32.7 per cent higher than average rainfall in July and a fairly active monsoon, the country is likely to experience a little more than normal rainfall in August. This, coupled with showers in the upstream, may trigger floods in the north-east and south-east during the first half of the month, the Met Office said yesterday (Wednesday).
It also forecast flooding in some places of the north-east and north-western regions of the country during the month.
One to two seasonal low pressures are likely, with one of them intensifying into a depression in the Bay of Bengal and strengthening the monsoon.
This forecast was made after a meeting of experts from different departments, including the Met Office, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre and SPARSO. They studied satellite images, weather data and reviewed the July weather.
In June, when the monsoon arrived in the country, there was more than 3.7 per cent higher than normal average rainfall.
