Expats in KSA can get MRPs thru Saudi Post at extra cost

Bangladeshi expatriates living in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can now get their machine readable passports (MRP) reissued through the designated branches of Saudi Post, the state owned postal service, in Riyadh.

This programme started from Tuesday, which will save time, working hours as well as travel cost, according to press release forwarded by the Bangladesh embassy in Riyadh yesterday.

For the time being, 10 branches of Saudi Post will provide this service, but later this service will be extended to the whole country.

From October 1, it will be compulsory for the expatriates to submit their applications with necessary documents from designated branches of Saudi Post because after September 30, the embassy will not receive any applications for the reissuance of the MRPs.

Explaining the rationale of introducing the system, the press release said that those coming to the embassy to get their MRPs reissued have to take a full-day leave and if leave is not granted they have to come on the condition that their one-day wage will be deducted. The same thing happens when they come to collect their reissued passports. But, if a person takes the service through the Saudi Post within Riyadh, he or she will have to pay 40 Saudi Riyals in addition to the fee fixed by the embassy. This figure will be 80 Riyals for those who will submit their applications in the branches other than Riyadh.

The embassy claimed that this initiative will save the expatriates both time and money. Having collected the applications with necessary documents listed on the embassy website, the Saudi Post will submit them to the embassy and after the reissue of passports they will be sent back to the Saudi Post to deliver among the applicants.

It will take 20-25 days to get the passports, but through the embassy website one will be able to track the status of his or her application. The Saudi Post will notify the applicants after their passports become ready for delivery.

Currently, on an average, 600 people come to the embassy everyday to receive services of whom 300-350 come to get their passports reissued.  The embassy issued about 4 lakh MRPs by 2014-15. Most of these passport holders will come to the embassy from 2018 and in that case the average people coming to the embassy will rise to 2,000 from 1,500.

The embassy believes the large number of Bangladeshi expatriates will be benefited if they get their passports reissued or issued anew through Saudi Post.
