Acute power cuts for the past four days have adversely affected academic and administrative works in Rajshahi University (RU).
With exams going on, the frequent outages even late at night have added to the misery of students living on campus.
Students of science faculties are the worst sufferers as they can hardly use the laboratories. “We cannot prepare for our exams adequately because there is no light most of the time,” complained Abu Sayed Sajol, a residential student.
His hostel mates, Robiul Islam Tusar and Emdadul Haque, echoed the grievance.
Nazmul Islam, a residential student of Madar Bux Hall, said: “Most of the time, we have to go without food because we use electric heaters in the halls and they don’t function properly due to frequent load shedding. This hampers our health and studies.”
Sources said a similar situation has been prevailing in the areas of the campus including Kazla, Binodpur, Talaimari, and Meherchandi.
Abul Hasnat, in charge of the RU power centre, said there was no technical problem on the campus.
“The problem is that the Talaimari sub-station has not been supplying adequate power to the campus,” he added.
RU chief engineer Prof. Sirajum Monir said the Power Distribution Board (PDB) has been supplying less power than that demanded by RU for the past few days and this has led to the load shedding problem.
“As RU authorities buy power from the PDB, we would discuss the matter with them,” he added.
