One to die for killing

RAJSHAHI: A trial court here yesterday sentenced a man to death for murdering his neighbour in Panchabati Shekherchalk area in Boalia Police Station of the city, reports BSS.

Judge of Speedy Trial Tribunal Shirin Kabita Akhter handed down the judgment convicting Ratan Hossain in his absentia. The court also fined him Tk 20,000.

The judge acquitted eight other persons in the case as the murder charges brought against them couldn't be proved.

The prosecution story, in brief, is that the convicted Ratan stabbed his neighbour Jony Hossain indiscriminately on November 24, 2013. Later Jony succumbed to his injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Ratan has been absconding since the incident. Belal Hossain, elder brother of the victim, lodged a case with local police station. After completion of investigation, police pressed charge sheets against nine persons including Ratan.

The tribunal handed down the verdict after examining prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidences. Special Public Prosecutor Entajul Haque Babu conducted the case on behalf of the state while Advocates Mozammel Haque and Abu Bakar defended the accused.
