PM to attend programme in city marking her birth anniv The 85th birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is set to be observed today, reports UNB. The ruling Awami League along with other like-minded social and political organisations will hold various daylong programmes to mark the day. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the eldest daughter of Bangamata, will attend a programme at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium marking her birth anniversary. Begum Mujib, wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was kept under house arrest during the liberation war by Pakistani army until December 17, 1971, a day after the country was liberated.
She was killed along with Bangabandhu and most of her family members by a disgruntled group of army officers on August 15, 1975. Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana are her two surviving children since they were abroad at that time. Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib, nicknamed Renu, was born in Tungipara in GopalGanj in 1930. Her early schooling was in a missionary school but later she did home schooling. She lost her parents at the age of five and was raised by her future mother-in-law, mother of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She was married to Bangabandhu at the age of 11 and had three sons and two daughters. Fazilatunnessa was also known for leadership skills. Whenever Bangabandhu was in jail for political reasons, she would keep contact with the Awami League leadership and give guidance in her husbands absence.
