Hefazats Mufti Izhar arrested

STAFF REPORTER, Ctg

The Detective Branch of police yesterday arrested Hefazat-e-Islam nayeb-e-amir Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury from Jameyatul-Ulum-Al Islamia Madrassa in the city’s Lalkhan Bazar area. Led by SM Tanvir Arafat, the sleuths arrested the Hefazat leader after conducting a raid at the madrassa at 2:30pm. He has been the prime suspect in the blast which killed three students and injured several others at a dormitory room of Jameyatul-Ulum-Al Islamia Madrassa on October 7, 2013.
Even though the Madrassa authorities had tried to attribute the explosion to a laptop burst, the law enforcers recovered grenades, acid and a large quantity of explosives during a raid at the madrassa after the blast. The police filed three cases under Homicide, Explosives and Acid Acts against Izaharul, his son Mufti Harun, and three other madrassa teachers and two students. Tanvir Arafat, additional deputy commissioner of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), told The Independent that the the Hefazat leader was arrested in front of the
madrassa gate.
Later, Izharul was taken to the CMP headquarters at Laldighi.
ABM Foyjul Islam, assistant commissioner of the CMP, told reporters that Izharul had been on the run for almost two years. “On being tipped off, we conducted a raid at the madrassa. We'll also investigate if Izharul had any connection with Hefazat’s Shapla Chattar rally on May 5, 2013,” he said.
Mufti Harun, a leader of Hefazat and a teacher of the madrassa founded by his father, is now behind bars.  He was arrested on October 9, 2013. A CMP press release yesterday claimed that Izharul's madrassa has been a safe haven for militants.
Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT), an extremist outfit, had planned to launch an attack on the US embassy and the Indian high commission in Dhaka in 2009 from his Lalkhan Bazar madrassa, the press release says.
Mufti Harun, son of Mufti Izhar, was involved in the attack plan, it mentions. The press release also claimed that those militants who were arrested on the charge of launching attack on the poet Shamshur Rahman in 1999 had received training in the madrassa founded by Izharul.
