The authorities concerned have declared a list of 22 national highways where plying of three-wheelers, including CNG-driven auto-rickshaws and non-mechanised vehicles, has been banned. Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader yesterday declared the names of the 22 highways at a press briefing at his Basurhat Bazar residence under Companyganj upazila in Noakhali district. The government has banned three-wheelers on national highways from August 1, citing their slow movement as the prime reason for road accidents. Disclosing the list of national highways, Obaidul Quader said, “It'll help owners of three-wheelers by letting them know on which roads they could ply their vehicles. The list has been made to stop harassment of police. A gazette notification will be issued soon in this regard.” In reply to a query, the minister said owners of CNG-run auto rickshaws, battery-run three-wheelers and other non-mechanised vehicles can use any road except the
22 listed national highways. The government is contemplating building a by-lane alongside the four-lane national highways from next year so that slow-moving three-wheelers could run on it, he added.
“Three-wheelers auto rickshaws, human haulers and other non-motorised vehicles can only ply on national highways from 6am to 8am for refuelling their vehicles from adjacent CNG stations,” he said.
The decision has been taken to curb road accidents and bring the highway traffic under rules and discipline, the minister added.
A report made by the Accident Research Institute (ARI) of BUET found a decline in number of accidents since the ban on plying of auto rickshaws and non-mechanized vehicles on national highways.
