Three killed in ‘gunfights’ with police

Three alleged criminals were killed in separate 'gunfights' with law enforcers in Brahmanbaria and Keraniganj of Dhaka district early yesterday, reports UNB. In Brahmanbaria, an alleged member of muggers' gang and a 'drug peddler' were killed in two separate incidents of 'gunfight' in Sarail and Kosba upazilas.

The deceased were identified as Yousuf Miah, 28, son of Nurul Haque, a resident of Kutir Maichkar village in Kasba upazila, and Rokon Miah, 45, son of Yakub Miah of Suhilpur village in Sadar upazila of Brahmanbaria district. Tipped off, a team of police arrested 'drug peddler' Yousuf Miah along with 90 kilograms of hemp from Tarbari area in Kosba upazila on Friday afternoon, said officer-in-charge of Kosba Police Station M Mohiuddin.

When the police team along with Yusuf went to Maijgaon village around 2:30am, cohorts of Yusuf opened fire on police. The law enforcers also retaliated, triggering a gunfight that left Yousuf dead on the spot. Police also recovered 45 kilograms of hemp, a pipe gun, and two rounds of bullets from the spot.

Officer-in-charge of Sarail Police station Rupok Kumar Saha said they had secret information that a gang of muggers was staying on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in a bid to snatch auto-rickshaw, a team of police station conducted a drive in the area around 12:30am.

The gunfight took place when a member of the gang, Rokon, and his associates opened fire at the police team, promoting them to retaliate that triggering a gunfight.

Rokon died on the spot during the exchange of fire while his cohorts managed to flee the scene. Besides, tipped off that a gang of robbers was planning to commit robbery in Jhilmil project area of Keraniganj upazila, a team of DB police of Dhaka district (South) set up a check post in the area early in the morning, said officer-in-charge (OC) of DB of Dhaka district (South) Dipok Chandra Saha.

Sensing presence of the team, the gang members opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to fire back that triggered a gunfight. At one stage, Jajj Miah, 35, was caught in the line of fire and received four bullets while his associates managed to flee the scene.

Later, he was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead. A shooter gun and three sharp weapons were recovered from the spot, said Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Keraniganj Dakkhin Police Station. Jajj Miah was accused in several robbery cases, the OC added.
