BAIRA urges govt to act tougher to ensure safe migration

UNB

Speakers at a dialogue yesterday called for strengthening government organisations to play a tougher role to ensure the safe and dignified migration, reports UNB.  The migrant workers are facing problems at home and abroad as they get limited access to justice due to lack of their knowledge, they said.

They came up the observation while speaking at the dialogue on “migration laws and policy: Access to Justice for Migrants and their Families” held at CIRDAP auditorium in the city.

WARBE Development Foundation and Lawyers beyond Borders’ Bangladesh jointly organised the programme where its WARBE Development Foundation director Jasiya Khatun presented the keynote paper.

Presided over by BMET director Nurul Islam, the dialogue was attended, among others, by Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training Director General M Salim Reza as chief guest.

Salim Reza said the government has already taken various programmes to disseminate information about safe migration across the country so that the country’s migrants could get information before leaving the country.

BMET director Dr Nurul Islam said although most of the migrant workers were employed abroad now in good condition but few migrants were still facing problems and failed to lodge complaints.

The female workers were facing common problems of language and foods at overseas countries, he said.

Country coordinator of Lawyers beyond Borders Bangladesh Abdullah Al Hasan said nearly 53 cases were filed in Cox’s Bazar about human trafficking of the migrants by sea, he said, adding that people did not know how many were convicted on those cases.
