O’Neil made batting consultant

Sports Reporter

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will give former Australian first class cricketer Mark O’Neil a series-basis contract as he replaced Sri Lankan Thilan Samaraweera as the batting consultant of Bangladesh.  The board will give him a long term contract should they feel pleased about his work. Samaraweera was also given contract series by series before BCB decided of not continuing with him.

“We have same contract with O’Neil what we had with Samaraweera.  He was appointed yesterday and would start work with national team and other aged level team from Sunday. If we feel he is giving what we want, we may go for a long term contract with him,” BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury said.

O’Neil came Bangladesh on Thursday and completed the formalities on Friday. He however had a long meeting with BCB head coach Chandika Hathurusingha on Saturday as they discussed about the future plan of the team.

Hathursingha came to BCB for the first time after having a holiday following the completion of ICC Champions Trophy. The national team had no practice session however on Saturday.

In a career spanning over 10 years, O’neil played 76 first class games and 21 List A matches but could never played for Australia team but he has well reputation as a batting consultant. He has the experience to work with the Australian team as a batting consultant.

O’Neil also coached New Zealand for a short period of time and then joined New South Wales as a batting consultant. He also worked as a batting coach for South Australia and Middlesex.

Meanwhile the national team will have a camp in Chittagong from August 4. Since the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium will host the second Test between Bangladesh and Australia, Cricket Operations Chairman Akram Khan felt that a camp in Chittagong will come as good for the players.
