The task for Pakistani people is now arduous: it has to ensure forward march of its checkered democracy with a very high standard of transparency and accountability the country’s Supreme Court has set for the nation for its elected leaders. This will go down in the history of Pakistan, especially its judiciary, as a milestone event, but there are risks also, as any compromise in future with the financial matters of its leaders would make this strength of its judiciary a questionable thing. It is expected that its judiciary will be able to exercise its judicial authority evenly.
The ouster verdict of the court on Nawaz Sharif was very much anticipated by people who were closely following the court proceedings of Nawaz family’s corruption scandal case doggedly pursued by the chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), country’s former cricketer Imran Khan. Many are of the opinion that there was a tacit, if not overt, influence of the country’s influential military on the court verdict, but the fact of the matter is Nawaz indeed submitted an incomplete statement of assets with his 2013 nomination papers and kept his financial accounts greatly opaque before the public.
After Panama Papers came to be known, Imran Khan picked this political opportunity and relentlessly tried to put the legality of Nawaz Sharif’s premiership on the dock. Finally, the blow he inflicted upon his political opponent has damaged his political career. Once declared unfit for the post of prime minister by the court for the rest of his life, Nawaz indeed had no option left, but to resign. Even then, his graceful acceptance of the court verdict deserves merit. Also, his resignation has proved that national interest is greater than an individual’s career, however powerful he might be. This should be the ideal case in any country that practices democracy by the way.
After Nawaz Sharif’s resignation a clear vacuum has been created in the leadership of Pakistan, and it is expected that since his party, PML-N, has majority seats in the parliament, there will not be any chaos regarding choosing who would the next prime minister. Since Sharif has nominated his brother Shahbaz Sharif for the premiership, he would soon take responsibility of guiding the nation at a time when Pakistan’s relations with its arch rival India and, crucially, with the US are in a critical juncture. Because of the domestic turmoil, Pakistan already failed to pay attention to its diplomatic relations with nations with which Pakistan’s interests are vitally related.
For smooth functioning of state affairs a smooth democratic process what the Pakistani people now need.
