A court yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing a garment worker of Rajapur upazila in 2009. The condemned convict was identified as Jahangir Hawlader, son of Monsur Hawlader of Char Indrapasha village in Mothbari union. Jahangir was tried in absentia. The court also fined him Tk one lakh.
According to prosecution, Akhi Akhter, daughter of Tashem Uddin of Badarpur village was raped by Jahangir while she was returning to her village home from Dhaka with him on October 20, 2009, reports UNB from Jhalakati.
Later, Jahangir killed Akhi and left the body in a paddy field at the village. Victim's mother Roshona Begum filed a case with Rajapur Police Station. Police submitted chargesheet against four people on May 12, 2010. After examining the records and 15 witnesses, Mohammad Bazlur Rahman, additional district and sessions judge, handed down the verdict acquitting three other accused.
