Alimun’s tumours likely to be operated next week: NINS

UNB

Doctors at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital (NINS) are likely to operate next week on the tumours of nine-year-old boy Alimun Sheikh, who has been afflicted by 12 tumours in his small body, reports UNB.

NINS associate professor Dr Sudipto Mukharjeee said the medical board members have got the diagnosis reports of around 7-8 medical tests, including CT scan, echocardiography, X-rays of chest and head and confirmed that Alimun has been suffering from tumours.

His disease is not a rare disease, he said.

Dr Sudipto said his tumours will be operated on next week after completing more some tests.

After carrying out the operation, they will scrutinize the operated tumours with Histopathology whether there are any germs in the tumours, he said adding that these tumours apparently are normal.

Alimun Sheikh was shifted to the NINS from Bagerhat Sadar Hospital last Thursday for better treatment. The cost of the treatment is being borne by the government.

Alimun, the only son of Sakhina Begum, has been afflicted by 12 tumours.

They first appeared when he was just one year old, and with the passage of time, his condition just kept deteriorating further.

Sakhina Begum, a single mother who works as a day-labourer (when work is to be found) could never afford his required treatment on her meagre income.

Hailing from Gazalia union of the district, Sakhina lost her husband when Alimun was only four years old. Since then, she has been forced to work as the sole breadwinner in the family, working day and night to save her only son’s life.

Little Alimun has six large tumours on the back side of his head and six more in the rest of his body.

When they first appeared, aged just one, Alimun was admitted to the Khulna Medical Hospital for treatment, but the doctors failed to diagnose his disease and sent him home.

As the years passed, the tumours grew larger and turned potentially malignant. On July 16, Alimun was admitted to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital as his condition became more critical.
