Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Wednesday said the Asia-Pacific region is failing to meet the demands placed on the labour market due to a skills shortage, reports UNB.
The minister came up with the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a conference titled “Regional Conference on TVET for Global Competitiveness” held at the capital’s Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh.
The Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC) and Technical Education Department and IEDB jointly organised the conference where some 23 representatives from the CPSC’s member countries were in attendance.
Nahid said the Asia-Pacific region has been working as central point to supply manpower globally for three decades but it has failed to fulfill the demands of labour market due to lack of skilled manpower. “Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) can play vital role to earn the required skill and knowledge.”
To put sustainable development in Bangladesh perspective, the minister said as the majority of Bangladeshis are young, they must be trained up properly.
“If it is possible to do so, they will get opportunities to work at home and abroad.”
Presided over by Technical and Madrasa Education Division Secretary M Alamgir, the programme was addressed, among others, by Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary M Sohorab Hossain and IEDB chairman engineer AKM Hamid.
