Reiterating that there will be no compromise with anyone when it comes to the fair election, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Tuesday hoped all the political parties will participate in the next parliamentary polls, reports UNB from Mymensingh.
"We won't compromise when it comes to arranging a fair election. The Election Commission will take all necessary measures so that all the parties can join the next election," he said while addressing a function at the Town Hall here marking the inauguration of the countrywide voter list updating programme.
The CEC also said the participation of all the parties in the polls helps create an election-friendly environment to a large extent.
At the event, the CEC along with four election commissioners opened the data collection of possible voters.
Any citizen who was born on or before January 1, 2000 is eligible to get enlisted as a voter.
Unlike in 2016, enumerators will have to make door-to-door visits till August 9 next for data collection this time.
About the electoral roll, Huda said an authentic voter list is a prerequisite to holding a free and fair election.
Warning the field-level officials and employees, he said no anomaly will be tolerated during the voter list updating programme.
Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder said money power and muscle power are the main barriers to the arrangement of fair election. "If democracy is not upheld in the country, there'll be no self-dignity," he said.
He urged the election officials to perform their duty properly. "Election is not a reality show. You'll have to discharge your duty with honesty and sincerity."
According to an EC Secretariat estimate, some 3.5 million people are likely to get enrolled as possible voters during the data collection. The photographs and fingerprints of the possible voters will be collected in three phases by November 5 next.
The draft updated voter list will be published across the country on January 2 to receive complaints over it till January 17. And the final voter list will be published on January 31 next after disposing of the complaints, if any.
According to the latest updated voter list published on January 31, 2017, the country has a total of 101,843,667 voters.
Three other election commissioners Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, Kabita Khanam and Rafiqul Islam also spoke on the occasion.
EC additional secretary Mokhlesur Rahman, acting Divisional Commissioner of Mymensingh Mozzamel Haque, Deputy Inspector General of Mymensingh Range Nibash Chandra Majhi, Superintendent of Police of the district Syed Nurul Islam, Chairman of Mymensingh Zila Parishad Prof Yusuf Khan Pathan and local municipality mayor Ikramul Haque Titu were, among others, present.
