Excise duty on Hajj pilgrims’ air ticket reduced

BSS

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has cut excise duty by Tk 1000 on the air ticket of Hajj passengers, reports BSS.

A circular issued by NBR said yesterday, the excise duty on the air ticket of Hajj passengers has been cut down to Tk 1000 from existing Tk 2000. Only Hajj passengers will be eligible to enjoy the reduced rate of excise duty.  Other airline passengers will have to pay the regular amount.

“This decision was taken at the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. It will ease the financial burden of Hajj passengers in purchasing the air ticket,” said NBR chairman Md Nojibur Rahman.

The decision would cause Tk 16 crore loss in collection of estimated revenue in fiscal year 2017-18.

A large number of Muslim Bangladeshis go to the Saudi Arabia for performing Hajj. The government does not want to collect higher revenue from them.
